Methodology

All figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey, ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates, for each Census place: median value of owner-occupied homes (B25077), median gross rent (B25064), median year structure built (B25035), tenure (B25003), occupancy (B25002), median household income (B19013) and total population (B01003). Gross rent yield is 12 × median gross rent ÷ median home value. Five-year estimates are used because they cover small cities as well as large ones; they describe the 2020–2024 period, not today's prices.
